Fiat Professional’s widely-acclaimed Doblò Cargo has picked up another important award, this time winning the Traders’ Choice accolade in the 2013 Trade Van Driver (TVD) Magazine Awards.

This latest title completes a hat-trick for Fiat Professional in the 2013 TVD Magazine Awards and is in addition to the previously announced awards for Fiat Professional’s Fiorino being named Best City Van and the Doblò Work Up winning Best Small Pick-Up.

The Trade Van Driver Awards are judged not only by the expert panel of journalists at the magazine but also by a panel of readers who use light commercial vehicles as part of their businesses.

Matthew Eisenegger, TVD Magazine Editor, presented the award to Sebastiano Fedrigo, director, Fiat Professional UK, on the Fiat Professional stand at this month’s CV show (9-11 April) in Birmingham.

Fiat Professional’s award-winning range has just scooped two more important accolades with its versatile Fiorino being named Best City Van and the recently introduced Doblò Work Up winning the Best Small Pick-Up award in the 2013 Trade Van Driver (TVD) Awards.

Both models beat off strong competition in securing victory in the awards, which are judged not only by an expert panel of journalists at the magazine but also by a panel of readers who use light commercial vehicles as part of their businesses.

The TVD Awards aim to give recognition to manufacturers, firms and people who, in the opinion of the judges, offer the very best to retail van buyers.

Best City Van – Fiat Fiorino

Fiat Professional's Doblò Work Up is a ‘dropside’ vehicle with compact external dimensions allowing easy use in urban areas. The external dimensions are not, however, a limit to its performance. The load box is 2.30 m long and 1.82 m wide, with 4.2 m² of loading area which can accommodate a payload of up to 1,000kg. Additionally, the Bi-Link suspension permits a rear axle load up to 1,450kg.

The Doblò Work Up is the ideal vehicle for agriculture, construction, maintenance or city parks services sectors. It is excellent for the transport of frames and glass and can take, for example, three Euro pallets or 33 boxes of fruit.

Fiat Professional’s highly successful Doblò Cargo has secured another prestigious award after being named Best Light Van in the VansA2Z Van of the Year Awards for 2013 announced yesterday at an industry lunch at Lords Cricket Ground, London.

The award was presented to Sebastiano Fedrigo, director, Fiat Professional UK, who said: “Our Doblò Cargo has been a huge success ever since it was launched and is widely recognised as a class-leader in its category.

“We are delighted to receive this honour from the VansA2Z team. It provides further proof of the all-round qualities of this excellent vehicle.”

Fiat Professional will display an impressive line-up of its award-winning range of commercial vehicles at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show held at Birmingham’s NEC (9-11 April, 2013).

Exhibits on the stand will show the breadth and depth of the Fiat Professional range and include UK debuts for the new Fiorino Crew Van, Scudo Crew Van and Ducato Tipper.  The new Crew Van versions provide fleet operators and businesses with flexible and versatile solutions for combined goods and people transport.

In total, there will be seven vehicles on the stand (no. 5F80, Hall 5) and there will be a further display area outside the main entrance of the show. 

Show-goers will be able to visit a ‘technology’ corner on the stand showcasing Fiat Professional’s product data system (PDS2), the new and improved website, and new Fiat Professional mobile website. 

The line-up of vehicles comprises:

New Scudo Crew Van 

Fiat Professional’s new Scudo Crew Van is powered by Fiat’s 2.0 MultiJet 130hp engine and is available on both short and long wheelbase bodies. The Scudo Crew Van has been developed with Snoeks Automotive, a leading European specialist in this sector. The conversion will offer six seats and a semi-glazed configuration with the specific components being supplied by Snoeks and assembled directly on the assembly line.

The rear cabin features a comfortable three seat bench which has individual head rests and each seat has a three-point seatbelt. The rear seats feature the same upholstery as that of the front seats. A bulkhead with window is positioned behind the rear seats providing protection against load intrusion into the cabin.

The rear passenger compartment has high quality and durable plastic trim for the interior panels and sliding door including the grab handle and cupholder. The fabric roof lining features a courtesy light and there is a removable carpet which sits on the rubber floor trim.

The conversion also allows for the storage of longer items as there is an extension of the load space under the rear seat.

Ducato

Fiat Professional will be exhibiting three versions of the Fiat Ducato at the show which include the new Ducato Tipper and a Ducato Tecnico on the stand and there will be a Ducato Luton conversion by Trucksmith Vehicle Body Builders on display outside.

The new Ducato Tipper is based on a MWB chassis and has been developed with VFS (Southampton) Ltd, a leading commercial vehicle converter specialising in high quality Tipper and Dropside conversions. Further details will be available at the show.

The Ducato Tecnico on the stand is based on the Ducato Van 35 L3H2 2.3 130 MultiJet II, but offers a number of attractive additional features as standard equipment that are normally available as extra cost options.

In addition to the already comprehensive normal standard specification on Ducato, the Tecnico adds manual air conditioning, front foglights, Blue&Me with controls on the steering wheel, TomTom predisposition on the dashboard, TomTom Live navigator, Start&Stop, special wheel trims and reverse parking sensors.

Ducato Tecnico versions provide customers with a great value for money package and are currently available at a promotional price of £13,495 OTR excluding VAT for the 30 L1H1 2.3 MultiJet II 130 version and £15,995 OTR excluding VAT for the 35 L3H2 2.3 MultiJet II 130 shown on the stand.

The Ducato is the latest incarnation of the best-selling van whose five generations have picked up numerous international awards and sold more than 2.4 million vehicles since 1981.

The Ducato offers a wide range of new content and a renovated engine family that enhances its competitiveness in the segment, and offers the market the best in terms of performance, comfort, payload and running costs.

Fiat’s range of Euro 5 engines is more powerful and diverse. Each one is a leader in its power bracket in terms of consumption, emissions and performance.  The range includes three 2.3 MultiJet II engines with power outputs of 110bhp, 130 bhp and 148 bhp respectively. There is also a 3.0 litre 180 MultiJet Power Euro 5 engine.

The 2.3-litre engines have MultiJet II technology which provides economy, ecology and performance levels that are unrivalled on the market.

Fiat has a proud history of leading the world when it comes to diesel power, and MultiJet II technology, the latest development, employs faster injectors with a new servo valve and balanced shutter allowing them to operate at 1800 bar of pressure compared to the 1600 bar of the previous generation. The fuel system is different from the first-generation MultiJet engines as it contains faster injectors that can carry out multiple injections close together.

The MultiJet II can manage eight injections per cycle with more speed, flexibility and precision in the various stages of operation.

Available as an option on Ducato is Blue&Me TomTom LIVE. This device allows customers to manage – through a practical colour touch-screen – phone calls, satellite navigation, media and all the driving information required, which it downloads directly from the on-board computer systems. This feature is standard on Ducato Tecnico versions.

The Comfort-Matic gearbox is an innovative robotised transmission that combines the advantages of a manual gearbox (simplicity, fuel efficiency and performance) with the practicality and comfort of an automatic transmission. It is therefore an extremely interesting option both for professionals in this sector and for those who love leisure, such as motorhome owners.

This gearbox is available on the 2.3 litre 130 and 150 MultiJet II engines in addition to the top-of-the-range 3.0 litre 180 MultiJet Power engine.

Technically, the gearbox is described as an MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) and consists of a conventional manual gearbox in which the manual linkage is replaced by an actuator, controlled electronically by a TCU (Transmission Control Unit).

Another significant new feature is Traction+, an innovative traction control system that improves the vehicle’s handling on difficult terrain with poor grip. This uses the engine’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) computer to simulate the behaviour of a self-locking differential. When one of the driven front wheels spins on a slippery surface or over poor terrain, the brakes are applied to that wheel as simultaneously engine torque is transferred to the wheel with better grip.

The system is operated by a button on the dashboard, can be engaged at speeds of up to 19mph and ensures the best possible traction is maintained over the roughest terrain.  

The adoption of Traction+ provides the benefit of lower weight, lower loading height and less expensive maintenance costs than a traditional 4x4 system.

Doblò Cargo

Fiat Professional will be exhibiting two versions from the award-winning Doblò Cargo line-up, the new XL and Work Up versions.

The Doblò XL further strengthens and broadens the appeal of the Doblò Cargo range. The Doblò XL’s combination of a long wheelbase and high roof provides a load volume of 5.0 m³ and a payload of 1,000kg, providing customers with a new proposition previously unavailable in this segment.

The new version’s high roof integrates seamlessly into the body providing an aerodynamic and elegant vehicle. The rear doors provide full access to the load compartment allowing customers to fully utilise the 5.0 m³ load volume.

The new Doblò XL Cargo versions are powered by a choice of three Euro 5 turbodiesel engines: 1.6 MultiJet 105 hp, 1.6 MultiJet 90hp MTA and 2.0 MultiJet 135hp. Combi versions are available with the 2.0 MultiJet 135hp only.

As with the current range, the new Doblò XL offers outstanding features such as Best in Class for payload and volume and Best in Class for load compartment dimensions (width and height).

With its increase in load volume, ease of loading, low fuel consumption, reduced operating costs, safety and comfort, the Doblò XL appeals to a  variety of customers including utilities, service vehicles (with ladder stored internally), converters and wheelchair-accessible transport for example.

The load box is made of high-resistance steel with a floor created from anti-slip multilayer wood and sides in aluminium alloy. Under the floor is a compartment for stowing long tools, safely protected from the elements.

In addition, on each side of the vehicle there is a small, practical step that allows the user to get into the load area. This structure has a ladder rack/door poles, load restraining hooks, and a sturdy protective grille on the rear window of the cab.

All these features make the Doblò Work Up ideal for agriculture, construction, maintenance or city parks services sectors. It is ideal for the transport of frames and glass and can take, for example, three Euro pallets or 33 boxes of fruit.

The Doblò Work Up is powered by a choice of two Euro 5 turbodiesel engines: 1.3 MultiJet II 90 bhp and 1.6 MultiJet 105 bhp. Both engines are characterised by excellent performance, low noise, low operating costs (fuel consumption and maintenance), reliability and environmental friendliness. Both feature the fuel-saving Start&Stop system as an option.

On the stand there will be a Fiat Doblò Work Up 1.6 105 MultiJet together with a Doblò XL Cargo 2.0 135 MultiJet SX.

Fiorino

Two versions of the award-winning Fiorino will feature including the new Fiorino Crew Van N1 1.3 75 MultiJet II Active and a Fiorino Cargo 1.3 75 MultiJet II SX.

Employing Fiat’s latest MultiJet technology which helps to reduce running costs and emissions, the new Fiorino Crew Van is powered by the 1.3 MultiJet II 75 hp engine and is a N1 homologated vehicle. Featuring panelled sliding side doors on both sides and twin panelled rear doors, the interior will have a rear passenger seat which can either be folded or removed completely. In addition, it will have deadlocks and remote control central locking as standard equipment. An optional non-removable ladder bulkhead, which sits behind the rear seats, is available to order now and a movable mesh bulkhead is also available and fitted to the display vehicle.

eco:Drive Professional

Fiat’s award-winning eco:Drive and its application for commercial vehicle drivers, eco:Drive Professional, are available for the Fiorino and Doblò models if equipped with Blue&Me and help drivers learn to use less fuel, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and saving up to 15 per cent in running costs.

Drivers download eco:Drive to their computer. Plugging any USB stick into the Blue&Me port allows acceleration, deceleration, gearshift and speed information to be saved onto it automatically. When the USB is plugged back into a computer, eco:Drive converts the data into facts and figures such as mileage, CO₂ emissions and money saved.

A development of this is eco:Drive Fleet which allows fleet managers to monitor all the data from the vehicles they supervise via an on-line dashboard. It automatically updates the database with management costs and the mileage count for maintenance intervals. As well as enabling fleet managers to reward efficient drivers, it allows them to see how well their fleet is performing according to an overall eco:Index.

Eco:Drive Professional builds on this further by allowing commercial vehicle drivers to enter various parameters such as the load they’re carrying and the frontal area of the vehicle. The software allows the driver or fleet manager to analyse the impact of the load on the vehicle’s efficiency and suggests the most appropriate behaviour to get the best economy.

Confirming the importance Fiat Professional attributes to the motorhome market, Fiat’s Ducato and the associated services on offer to motorhome owners will once again feature prominently on the Fiat Professional stand, 3125, at The Spring Caravan & Camping Show, held at the NEC, Birmingham, 19-24 February 2013.

New for 2013, The Spring Caravan & Camping Show is the UK’s biggest and most exciting start-of-the-year showcase where major UK and European motorhome manufacturers will be displaying their latest season’s models with many based on the Fiat Ducato chassis.

Visitors to the Fiat Professional stand will have the opportunity to view the technical details of a motorhome chassis close up, talk to staff from Fiat Professional and discover the full range of services available to Fiat based motorhome owners to ensure that they will be travelling with confidence.

Fiat Ducato: Real holidays, peace of mind

Right from the design phase, the Fiat Ducato has been conceived and developed in collaboration with the biggest European motorhome manufacturers. This is reflected in the plethora of solutions devised especially to optimise both driving and life on board a Ducato-based motorhome.

Recently restyled, the Ducato is the evolution of a best seller which for the last 30 years - with its five generations - has been reaping international awards and commercial successes, as proven by more than 2.3 million vehicles sold worldwide from 1981 to date.

This is how a winning product was created, capable of meeting every converter’s requirements: simply consider the fact that given the possible combinations of bodies, capacities and engines, a record 700 motorhome-specific versions can be achieved, a third of the Ducato's total versions. To this flexibility can be added ease of conversion and, above all, quality and versatility for the end customer. The result is a market leading product with record sales: more than two out of three motorhomes sold in Europe are assembled on a Ducato base.

Fiat Ducato: Travelling with Confidence

Fiat Professional is the only manufacturer to offer a specific engine for each type of motorhome, as well as a variety of power options for each engine. All Euro 5, the range of engines was redesigned to offer even greater power - with an average 15/20 HP increase - and consumption which has been reduced by 9-10% compared to the previous Euro 4 engines.

The Fiat Ducato's engines are best in class in their categories in terms of their performance/consumption ratio, as well as standing out thanks to their low noise levels, optimised weight and increased service intervals (48,000km 30,000 miles).

The 130 and 150 MultiJet versions offer optimum flexibility and are ideal for medium sized motorhomes. Specifically, the 150 HP version offers the same performance as the previous 3 litre Euro 4 engine, but with significantly reduced consumption. The 180 MultiJet Power has been adapted for large sized motorhomes, or those weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, which is a growing market segment. Depending on the version, the new Ducato engines also benefit from second-generation MultiJet injection, which represents technology, performance and economy.

Customers are therefore able to select the engine option which best meets their needs and best suits the type of motorhome they require.

Comfort-Matic: the ideal solution for travelling in total comfort

Also of great interest to motorhome customers is the Comfort Matic 6-speed robotised gearbox, which is already available on the 180 MultiJet Power and has recently also been extended to the 130 and 150 MultiJet engines.

Fiat Professional is the only manufacturer to offer motorhome customers a robotised gearbox which is available with all three engines. The Comfort-Matic gearbox’s popularity is increasing  and currently achieving over 25% of the sales mix, providing  customers with an advantageous balance between performance and fuel economy.

The Comfort-Matic gearbox is an innovative robotised transmission that combines the advantages of a manual gearbox (simplicity, fuel efficiency and performance) with the practicality and comfort of an automatic transmission. It is therefore an extremely interesting option for those who love leisure, such as motorhome owners.

The gearbox meets the demands of all those customers interested in the specific features of automatic transmissions, and increases the Ducato’s already consolidated values of flexibility and versatility. The Comfort-Matic gearbox provides an ideal solution for recreational vehicles such as motorhomes and camper vans.

Great attention has been paid to adapting and customising the gearbox for recreational vehicles during the development stage. Proof of that is the use of motorhome prototypes for the tuning and testing stage, with faithful reproduction of the configurations of front surfaces, gross vehicle weight and the typical usage conditions of this vehicle class. In addition, to respond to the mobility needs of caravans and motorhomes, which, by their nature, are used in maximum load conditions, there is a special UP button on the Comfort-Matic gearbox panel. It automatically optimises the gear shift points to ensure the most appropriate engine rpm in any condition and improve performance in particularly harsh conditions or on steep slopes.

Technically, the gearbox is described as an MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) and consists of a conventional manual gearbox in which the manual linkage is replaced by an actuator, controlled electronically by a TCU (Transmission Control Unit).

In detail, the gearbox offers six speeds (plus reverse) that work in both fully automatic mode and in a sequential manual mode with actuation. In manual mode, the driver can choose which ratio to engage by means of the ‘joystick’ gear lever on the dashboard, and there is no clutch pedal.

In automatic mode, the driver can make use of the numerous functions typical of electronic transmission management:

• Uphill-Downhill Mode: gearshift logic managed by software to ensure the best ratio depending on road gradient;
• Warm Up Mode: emission reduction strategy during cold starts;
• Brake Assistance Mode: ratio reduction to support vehicle deceleration;
• Kick Down Mode: reduction in the ratio following abrupt action on the accelerator pedal (for example, during overtaking);
• Fast Off Detection: gearshift inhibition if the accelerator is released quickly.

The Comfort-Matic gearbox, used in automatic mode, offers several advantages over a manual device. For example, it offers maximum driving comfort, especially in heavy town traffic conditions, and great driving satisfaction due to the smooth gear shifts. Pressing the UP button on the transmission tunnel, makes it possible to use a special profile for driving in mountainous areas or under heavy load conditions. And there’s more: the Comfort-Matic gearbox ensures efficient engine braking on steep gradients, while the lever and gearbox control systems ensure maximum reduction in transmission noise.

Compared with conventional automatic transmissions, the New Fiat Ducato Comfort-Matic offers lower weight (approximately 30% less), greater fuel economy, improved energy efficiency and also a significant reduction in maintenance and repair costs.

The innovative Comfort-Matic robotised gearbox, available on the 130 and 150 MultiJet II versions, further illustrates Fiat Professional’s on-going commitment to its customers, and particularly motorhome owners.

Total safety with the Traction+ control system

Already at the top of its category in terms of safety features, Ducato includes Fiat’s Traction+ system which assists drivers in situations with low grip, in a similar way to an electro-mechanical self-locking differential, but without the extra weight and friction of a four-wheel drive system.

The system exploits the state-of-the-art hardware present on vehicles with ESP, which electronically simulates the behaviour of a self-locking differential: when a wheel starts slipping, the electronic control unit of the hydraulic circuit applies the brakes to the wheel and transfers the drive torque to the wheel on the road surface with the most grip. This makes it easier to manoeuvre the vehicle on surfaces with poor grip: such as snow or mud, ice, or the grass of a campsite pitch.

The range's latest new features

Over recent months, several solutions have been introduced which have been designed to improve vehicle usage for motorhome owners. This starts with the new van base which has been adapted for large volume motorhomes, combined with specially designed light mechanicals with 15" wheels to allow driving with a category B licence. Another new feature is the introduction of new cab and chassis cowl versions with extra-long wheel base (4300 mm) to ensure better dynamic behaviour and increased stability on the road.

There's also a new dashboard design for an even more welcoming interior which is packed with intelligent solutions to make life on-board easier, like the seats which can be rotated through 180 degrees. With a graphically pleasing appearance and simple and responsive navigation, the website offers technical information, news and events, as well as specific functions such as the Chassis Check, one of the most popular services, which allows customers to check if their motorhome has been updated with the latest technical set-up or is subject to any recall campaigns.

Other widely used functions include the Find a Service Centre option, which allows customers to search quickly by country, particularly useful for those planning a trip who are looking for an up-to-date list, which can be downloaded and printed, showing the service centres located along the chosen route.

Specifically, there are more than 6500 Fiat Professional service centres throughout Europe, all of which are equipped to service and repair motorhomes with Fiat Ducato bases. Visitors to the site can find comprehensive details of the Fiat Professional range including technical specifications, pricing, options, finance packages, latest promotions plus useful and interesting information on the Fiat Professional brand and the services it provides. Choosing the right vehicle can sometimes be a difficult choice for customers. Fiat Professional’s versatile Fiorino has received further confirmation of its outstanding fleet credentials as it has just been awarded the significant title of City Van of the Year in the 2012 Fleet Van Awards, held at a special winner’s lunch in London today.

The Fleet Van Awards, now in their fifth year, are the benchmark awards for the light commercial vehicle industry, with trophies awarded to manufacturers, fleet operators and suppliers. 

The van categories compare vehicles across a number of core fleet criteria, including payload, safety, technology, running costs, fuel efficiency/CO₂ emissions, reliability, aftersales service and back-up offered by the dealer network. They also include driver appeal in terms of comfort and performance.

The judging panel includes members of the Fleet News/Fleet Van editorial team and an independent team of van experts.

Fiat Professional’s Fiorino beat off strong competition to win this year’s City Van award and the judges were particularly impressed with Fiorino for its latest MultiJet II engines, economy, practicality and the levels of fleet support and back-up through Fiat Professional’s dealer network.

Specialist tools and equipment supplier, Brandon Hire, has taken delivery of six new KFS ‘Plant & Go’ delivery vehicles based on Fiat Professional’s Euro 5 Ducato.

With its head office in Bristol, and a nationwide network of branches, Brandon Hire is one of the UK’s leading tool hire firms, providing an extensive range of tools and equipment to the building and construction industry. 

Built by KFS Special Vehicles Ltd to Brandon Hire’s specification, the vehicles are based on the Fiat Ducato 33 B2B chassis 2.3 MultiJet II 130hp version, and are fitted with a single passenger seat and a 68mph speed-limiter. The vehicle has a GVW of 3500kg and a 1910kg kerb weight. Base vehicles have been supplied by Fiat Professional dealer, Adams Morey Ltd in Southampton, Hants. The Ducato ‘Plant & Go’ vehicles will be used to transport light plant and equipment to customers. 

With vehicle floor height being only 530mm from the ground and a torsion sprung tailgate, loading and unloading of plant hire equipment is carried out both quickly and safely. This low loader vehicle has a number of tie-down points to allow for all different plant and tools to be carried.

 “We chose the Fiat Ducato Back to Back due to its ability to carry a mini-digger on the vehicle without the need to tow a trailer,” said Brandon Hire’s Fleet and Logistics Manager, Steve Pensom.

“What really impressed us, when the vehicle was on test, was the fact that anyone with a car licence could drive the truck. This benefit, along with improved MPG performance and the potential to safely carry greater payloads, provided us with the ideal vehicle to help minimise our costs and maximise our staff levels.” 

The KFS Ducato ‘Plant & Go’ has been designed to allow for very low electric powered mobile towers to be loaded, and with the multiple tie-down points, the vehicle is very versatile in what it can carry, from the smallest generator to a mini-digger or the traditional 3.5m Herras fence panel. 

“We are delighted that once again the Fiat Ducato has been chosen as the base for the KFS low loader transporter ordered by Brandon Hire,” says Sebastiano Fedrigo, director, Fiat Professional UK.

The range includes three 2.3 MultiJet II engines with power outputs of 110hp, 130hp and 150hp respectively. There is also a 3.0 litre 180 MultiJet Power Euro 5 engine.

All the 2.3 litre Ducato engines are part of the second-generation MultiJet family, which represents technology, performance and economy.

All engines stand out for their exceptional performance, long service intervals, low consumption (saving up to 15% compared with Euro 4 engines) and CO₂ emissions well below legal limits, as well as for their quietness and relatively low weight, which is always important for a commercial/leisure vehicle where tonnage is a key factor.

Each engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox, and customers can specify both 2.3 litre engines (130hp and 150hp)  in addition to the 3.0-litre with the six-speed Comfort-Matic Manual Transmission Automated. This is a traditional manual transmission except there is no clutch pedal, and the manual linkage to the gearbox is replaced by actuators controlled by a Transmission Control Unit. The shift is either performed automatically or the driver can use the gear lever to prompt changes by pulling backwards or pushing forwards.

Fiat’s award-winning eco:Drive and its application for commercial vehicle drivers, eco:Drive Professional, are available on any commercial vehicle fitted with Blue&Me and helps drivers learn to use less fuel, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and saving up to 15 per cent in running costs.

Drivers download eco:Drive to their computer. Then plugging any USB stick into the vehicle’s Blue&Me port allows acceleration, deceleration, gearshift and speed information to be saved onto it automatically. When the USB is plugged back into a computer, eco:Drive converts the data into facts and figures such as mileage, CO₂ emissions and money saved.

A development of this is eco:Drive Fleet which allows fleet managers to monitor all the data from the vehicles they supervise via an on-line dashboard. Fiat Professional’s Ducato and the associated Fiat services on offer to motorhome users will feature prominently on the Fiat Professional stand (Hall 9 stand 9 -97) at The Motorhome & Caravan Show 2012, held at the NEC, Birmingham (16–21 October, 2012).

The show is the UK’s biggest and most important motorhome and caravanning event and visitors will be able to see the latest new 2013 motorhomes from the leading UK and European manufacturers with many based on the Fiat Ducato chassis.

Fiat Professional’s Ducato continues to forge ever stronger links with the motorhome world. As the sector's clear leader, Fiat Professional is the only vehicle manufacturer to create bases which are specifically designed, developed and manufactured for conversion, and produced in collaboration with motorhome manufacturers, as well as being one of the first to offer a range of services dedicated to providing a support network conceived especially for Fiat Ducato motorhome owners.

Exhibits on the Fiat Professional stand will include a Ducato 3.0 litre 180bhp chassis cab with the new extra-long wheelbase equipped with Comfort-Matic gearbox; together with displays of this transmission and a Euro 5 3.0 litre 180 MultiJet engine.

Fiat Ducato: Real holidays, peace of mind

Right from the design phase, the Fiat Ducato has been conceived and developed in collaboration with the biggest European motorhome manufacturers. This is reflected in the plethora of solutions devised especially to optimise both driving and life on board a Ducato-based motorhome.

Recently restyled, the new Ducato is the evolution of a best seller which for the last 30 years - with its five generations - has been reaping international awards and commercial successes, as proven by more than 2.3 million vehicles sold worldwide from 1981 to date.

This is how a winning product was created, capable of meeting every converter’s requirements: simply consider the fact that given the possible combinations of bodies, capacities and engines, a record 700 motorhome-specific versions can be achieved, a third of the Ducato's total versions. To this flexibility can be added ease of conversion and, above all, quality and versatility for the end customer. The result is a market leading product with record sales: more than two out of three motorhomes sold in Europe are assembled on a Ducato base.

Fiat Ducato: Travelling with Confidence

Fiat Professional is the only manufacturer to offer a specific engine for each type of motorhome, as well as a variety of power options for each engine. All Euro 5, the range of engines was redesigned last year to offer even greater power - with an average 15/20 HP increase - and consumption which has been reduced by 9-10% compared to the previous Euro 4 engines.

The Fiat Ducato's engines are best in class in their categories in terms of their performance/consumption ratio, as well as standing out thanks to their low noise levels, optimised weight and increased service intervals (48,000km 30,000 miles).

The 130 and 150 MultiJet versions offer optimum flexibility and are ideal for medium sized motorhomes. Specifically, the 150 HP version offers the same performance as the previous 3 litre Euro 4 engine, but with significantly reduced consumption. The 180 MultiJet Power has been adapted for large sized motorhomes, or those weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, which is a growing market segment. Depending on the version, the new Ducato engines also benefit from second-generation MultiJet injection, which represents technology, performance and economy.

Customers are therefore able to select the engine option which best meets their needs and best suits the type of motorhome they require.

Comfort-Matic: the ideal solution for travelling in total comfort

Also of great interest to motorhome customers is the Comfort Matic 6-speed robotised gearbox, which is already available on the 180 MultiJet Power and has recently also been extended to the 130 and 150 MultiJet engines.

Technically, this is a robotised manual gearbox. The gear shifts are activated by electronically controlled hydraulic actuators. This is a highly advanced, unique, latest generation product which offers extremely swift and self-adaptive gear shifts.

In addition to the automatic mode, using the gear lever on the dashboard, the vehicle can be switched to semi-automatic or completely manual, meaning it can be adapted to suit a wide variety of needs.

Also of note is the exclusive UP function: pressing the designated button activates a range of functions especially designed for those - such as motorhome owners - who need to travel fully loaded, over challenging terrain and rough roads. In these situations, the system ensures greater engine braking and anticipated gear changing.

Total safety with the Traction+ control system

Already at the top of its category in terms of safety features, Ducato now includes Fiat’s Traction+ system which assists drivers in situations with low grip, in a similar way to an electro-mechanical self-locking differential, but without the extra weight and friction of a four-wheel drive system.

The system exploits the state-of-the-art hardware present on vehicles with ESP, which electronically simulates the behaviour of a self-locking differential: when a wheel starts slipping, the electronic control unit of the hydraulic circuit applies the brakes to the wheel and transfers the drive torque to the wheel on the road surface with the most grip. This makes it easier to manoeuvre the vehicle on surfaces with poor grip: such as snow or mud, ice, or the grass of a campsite pitch.

The range's latest new features

Over recent months, several solutions have been introduced which have been designed to improve vehicle usage for motorhome owners. This starts with the new van base which has been adapted for large volume motorhomes, combined with specially designed light mechanicals with 15" wheels to allow driving with a category B licence. Another new feature is the introduction of new cab and chassis cowl versions with extra-long wheel base (4300 mm) to ensure better dynamic behaviour and increased stability on the road.

There's also a new dashboard design for an even more welcoming interior which is packed with intelligent solutions to make life on-board easier, like the seats which can be rotated through 180 degrees. And depending on the trim level, customers can also choose between three different dashboard finishes: dark grey (standard), Techno (with aluminium coloured air vents) and Elegant (which includes air vents and the central module in walnut effect Dip-print™).

The new Ducato's infotainment system includes exclusive and innovative solutions like a new car radio integrated in the dashboard, myPort for the TomTom navigator and the integrated Blue&Me system, which has controls on the steering wheel and manages an array of connection functions, like hands-free telephone and playing music from MP3 devices (including latest-generation iPods™).

With more than 120,000 hits per month, the dedicated fiatcamper.com website is being visited more and more often by motorhome owners all over Europe who are looking for services or information. With a graphically pleasing appearance and simple and responsive navigation, the website offers technical information, news and events, as well as specific functions such as the Chassis Check, one of the most popular services, which allows customers to check if their motorhome has been updated with the latest technical set-up or is subject to any recall campaigns.

Other widely used functions include the Find a Service Centre option, which allows customers to search quickly by country, particularly useful for those planning a trip who are looking for an up-to- date list, which can be downloaded and printed, showing the service centres located along the chosen route.

Specifically, there are more than 6500 Fiat Professional service centres throughout Europe, all of which are equipped to service and repair motorhomes with Fiat Ducato bases. More than 1800 of these offer further specialised services especially for this type of vehicle, with increased workspace, enclosed parking and ramps capable of supporting larger weights.

Medical Services Ltd has just taken delivery of 66 new Fiat Doblò Combi wheelchair accessible vehicles. 

The vehicles, all Euro 5 Doblò Combi Maxi (long wheelbase L2H1) N1 Active 1.6 MultiJet 16v Diesel 105 versions, are being supplied to Medical Services Ltd (MSL), through Fiat Professional dealer, HTC Van centre, Croydon, Surrey. They have been converted to MSL’s specification by Lateral Design Concepts Ltd of Keighley, West Yorkshire.

All vehicles, which feature the distinctive Medical Services livery, have been converted to a single wheelchair accessible vehicle with bi-fold access ramp. Base vehicle options fitted include the passenger airbag. Lateral worked closely with MSL to produce a vehicle tailored to their exact requirements, developing a highly versatile, durable and hygienic accessible vehicle appropriate for increasingly demanding ambulance patient transport applications. The resulting ‘MediWav’ conversion is now part of Lateral’s highly efficient ‘Compact PTS’ model range.

The vehicles will be used to transport wheelchair using or walking patients to hospital appointments.

Household appliance and home computer specialists Currys PC World has spiced up its service engineer van fleet with the delivery of 50 new Fiat Doblo Cargo Maxi vehicles.

The £600,000 deal, with vans supplied and managed by VMS Fleet Management Ltd, puts Fiat Professional’s popular 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel commercial vehicle into the heart of Currys PC World’s van fleet. As part of a new service engineer project, the vans will be used for home service visits, their 1000kg payload and 4.2 cubic metre volume allowing easy transportation of large, heavy items such as washing machines and fridge freezers.

“The Doblo Cargo Maxi was chosen for its excellent fuel economy and low CO₂ emissions, as well as the 1000kg payload,” says Martin James, managing director, VMS Fleet Management Ltd. “It was also useful that the vehicles came straight from the factory in black, as this was the colour Currys PC World requested.”

Loaded with equipment, the Doblo Cargo Maxi has ABS anti-lock brakes, electric windows, power steering and central locking as standard, while options include air conditioning, electric door mirrors and headlamp washers.

Fiat Professional’s award-winning Doblò Cargo van range has just been expanded with the introduction of the New Doblò XL version.

Following on from the Doblò Work Up launched last year, the New Doblò XL further strengthens and broadens the appeal of the Doblò Cargo range. The Doblò XL’s combination of a long wheelbase and high roof provides a load volume of 5.0 m³ and a payload of 1,000kg, providing customers with a new proposition previously unavailable in this segment.

The new version’s high roof integrates seamlessly into the body providing an aerodynamic and elegant vehicle. The rear doors provide full access to the load compartment allowing customers to fully utilise the 5.0 m³ load volume.

The new Doblò XL Cargo versions are powered by a choice of three Euro 5 turbodiesel engines: 1.6 MultiJet 105 hp, 1.6 MultiJet 90hp MTA and 2.0 MultiJet 135hp. Combi versions will be available with the 2.0 MultiJet 135hp only.

As with the current range, the new Doblò XL offers outstanding features such as Best in Class for payload and volume and Best in Class for load compartment dimensions (length and height).

The new XL version will sit between the Purpose Built Van and Small Panel Van segments and is likely to attract customers from the latter as it offers the same load capacity and payload (1 Ton) but at a lower price.

With its increase in load volume, ease of loading, low fuel consumption, reduced operating costs, safety and comfort, the Doblò XL will appeal to a  variety of customers including utilities, service vehicles (with ladder stored internally), converters and wheelchair-accessible transport for example.

Fiat Professional’s Doblò Cargo Bi-Link suspension ensures a smooth ride, and its range of environmentally-friendly Euro 5-compliant engines makes it cleaner and cheaper to run.

The New Doblò XL will be available in Cargo N1, Combi N1 and M1 versions and as with the existing Doblò Cargo and Combi range, the Doblò XL will be available in two trim levels. In addition, Combi M1 versions will have side airbags and ESP as standard equipment.

Options include Blue&Me with steering wheel controls, Blue&Me TomTom navigator and eco:Drive Professional software.
